About ElNino:
- El Nino is a climate pattern that describes the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.
- El Nino was first recognized by Peruvian fishermen off the coast of Peru as the appearance of unusually warm water.
- The Spanish immigrants called it El Nino, meaning “the little boy” in Spanish.

About Tibet :
- Tibet is a region on the Tibetan Plateau in Asia, spanning about 2.4 million km2 – nearly a quarter of China’s territory.
- It is the traditional homeland of the Tibetan people as well as some other ethnic groups.
- Tibet is the highest region on Earth, with an average elevation of 4,900 metres.
- Tibet was not “Chinese” until Mao Zedong’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) marched in and made it so.

PRISON REFORMS
Why is in news?
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs in its report has observed that pregnant women prisoners and their children are lodged among other prisoners in overcrowded jails in the country.
More in news :
- The committee is headed by Rajya Sabha MP Brij Lal, who is also a former IPS officer.
- He has recommended that the authorities concerned must ensure that pregnant women in jail should be able to give birth outside the prison and their newborn babies must be cared for with proper food, shelters, vaccination education, recreational space, and physical growth.
- It has recommended that babies should be allowed to stay with mothers in jails until the age of 12.
- Only Tamil Nadu, and 7 other states namely Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Telangana’ have borstal schools.
- It has recommended at least 2-3 borstal schools be opened in whichever state it does not exist. The panel has recommended special infrastructure for transgender prisoners.
- It has been observed that states that house most of the prisoners are still below the benchmark as per the set norms.
- The panel has stated that the majority of the natural deaths in Indian prisoners
- occurs due to heart problem, lung-related ailments, cancer, TB, etc.

- The Supreme Court in India has started allowing sign language interpretation for hearing impaired lawyers, demonstrating that not everything needs to be spoken aloud in court. In a recent case, a deaf advocate Sarah Sunny was permitted to virtually argue with the help of a sign language interpreter.
- The Directorate General of Lighthouses has identified 75 historical lighthouses to be developed as tourism hubs. It will promote 13 lighthouses in TN located at Pulicat, Poompuhar, Karaikal, Nagapattinam, Kodikarrai, Mallipatinam, Pamban, Kilakarai, Dhanuskodi, Mannapad, Kuthenkuli, Kanyakumari, and Mahabalipuram as tourist destinations.
- The first C-295 medium tactical transport aircraft was inducted into the Indian Air Force (IAF). The C-295 aircraft is capable of carrying up to nine tonnes of payload or as many as 71 troops at a maximum cruise speed of 260 knots.
